to be or not to be

"islamic fashion should be "mosque compliant',meaning, keep it simple.Otherwise, it might wrongly be interpreted that such design are acceptable in islam"-Noorkumalasari

'dressing in 'islamic fashion' does not mean you are a better muslim than one who does not'-marina mahathir

recently there was an article came out in the sunday star, called 'fashionable quandary'. i was featured, gave a piece of my mind tentang islamic fashion.. u know yang dipanggil IFF tu la. memang i dari dulu memang berbulu dengan benda-benda macam ni,tak tahu macammana i nak salurkan my pendapat kat society tentang how so wrong this thing is, untill my writer friend yang kerja kat Star called me to ask about my opinion in this, below is the quote..

Rizalman, however feels very strongly that fashion and islam cannot mix.he has not participated in the IFF and neither does he promote islamic fashion in any form for the simple reason that he doesn't believe there is such a thing. "fashion is fashion and islam is islam.i dont believe in mixing religion and fashion because religion doesn't stop one from partipating in fashion and islam encourages us to be beautiful,so its about what you think fashion is. "like the arab, you can wear shorts, skirts, and bustiers but you must know when and where to wear such clothes-at home among the women. But when you go out, you wear the jubah or hijab. "When you mix fashion and religion there is no way out, thats why you see mid-length kaftans with calf leggings.Like you put up Al-Quran recital and mix it with hip hop.Aurat is still aurat.

"
The reason why we cover our aurat and wear the jubah is to stop people looking at us.But if you wear colour, beading, etc, that's to invite people to look at you,and that's wrong". So how does he deal with clients that wear the headscarf and selendang and want him to design islamic style clothes? "if someone asks me to design something with specific requirements,i dont consider it my creation.I am merely rendering a service to my client. He finds it very irritating when people think his designs are islamic fashion,as he says there is difference between referencing culture in a design and using religion. "middle eastern fashion is cultural, that's where the reference comes from.if you're thinking of clothes that cover, our baju kurung is already muslim wear so why bother creating anything else?" Rizalman believes that before anything else, when it comes to covering up,what islam says is god's law,and that,to him cannot be changed according to whims and fancies. "fashion is not just about clothes. You can still follow the fashion trends of shoes, bags and accessories, and forget about dresses and skirts that are not Muslim-appropriate.- rizalman

kalau ada yang tersinggung, harap maaf..tapi inilah kenyataannya. kalau ada yang nak berdebat, silakan.!

Assalamualaikum

Finally!

Im glad u did gave your opinion regarding this issue. On the other hand, Im quite suprised too.. u're not like the rest who will jump into any oppportunity given in order to spread their wings and increase their market value or whatsoever.

Islam is Islam. Fashion is fashion. It can be mixed but with Islamic boundaries stated by Al-Quran & Sunnah & Hadiths... i.e not revealing ones neckline, neck, ears, hair, .... etc.

Yes we can still look fashionable it's up to individual muslimah/muslims. There are many hijabee's blog out there that have given outline on what we should say.. Fashion in Islamic way.

I respect u for that Rizalman :) *salute*

RESPECT U RIZALMAN!!

Yeah...thats the first thing that came to my mind when i saw the pics of IFF tuh last year . It doesnt comply with the religion . Most of them are body hugging , most of them feature hijab 'mak datin' and penuh lip lap lip lap .

Tulah , kalau nak tunjuk the real fashion in Islam boleh , just make sure that it is what it truly is .

When i saw the pictures in this post, the first thing that came across my mind was " Apehal dia ni buat baju macam ni, tak sesuai", then i read through the whole thing and was relief, it's not your designs.

Saya setuju, ade antara design2 yg digayakan masa iff tu sgt tak memenuhi ciri2 perempuan islam, ia tak menutup aurat seperti yg sepatutnya. Kalau ade yg nak menggayakan pakaian macam tu tak salah, tapi jangan cop cara pemakaian tu sebagai fesyen islam, because it's wrong.

Perempuan islam kalau nak berfesyen boleh, tapi berpada2, macam ape yg Norkumala Sari cakap tu, saya setuju sangat.

emaiyl said...

betul! nak berfesyen macam tu boleh, tapi jgn labelkan pakaian agama islam.. sama aje mcm botol arak letak gambar masjid pasti cop tanda halal..walaupun isinya sebenarnye memabukkan..,tak ke haru biru jadinya nanti? di mana letaknya harga tahap tauhid perempuan islam yang lain yang telah memakai hijab?renung2kan..

apa yg u ckp tu betul..
bcoz selama nih i ingat ada "fesyen islam"...tapi kdg2 most designers ada yg lebih2. dia moden kan islamic fashion

cth mcm tudung yg serkop kepala jer tu...leher nampak tapi namanya fesyen islam...hurmm quite a bit confuse la. better free hair jer..if tutup, tutup semua..

thanks for ur info... ;)

Wow Rizalman, I am glad u wrote this blog. I completely agree dengan your opinion. Islamic wear/fashion adalah seumpama mengunakan agama sebagai isu or propaganda.

Sebagai pemerhati dari jauh saya rasa there is no such thing as Islamic Wear, even dekat Middle East pun orang Arab tak panggil fesyen sebagai Islamic Wear or ^!£%%^^%^£!!! what ever you all want to call it.

Kalau dah bertudung it is better to keep it simple and tak payah tambah aksessori jadi makin serabut lagi. Lepas tu colour seperti pelangi and secara tak lansung menarik perhatian.

Rizalman I sokong you and teruskan perjuangan untuk educated and being honest about Malaysia fashion scene. I do feel that the Malay designer do need to find their own identity, because I know ever since you started you know your identity, style and most importantly business minded, that is what a designer need. Bukan syok sendiri! Good Job

as a muslim they should know about surah AL-AHZAB:33.

a very good input there,rizalman.
sometimes they just dont understand and try to differentiate between being fashionable and try to be appealing although with hijab. The total concept of aurat is stated in the Quran which all of us a muslim must adhere to.But being trying to be creative enough sometimes hurt and does damages in the real total concept of aurat.Indeed doesnt mean that you covering the aurat you cant wear any trendy clothes,of course u can but then as long as you know your limit and not go against as what stated in Quran then it should be fine. Please dont try to create such funny ideas of wearing a 120 Demier leggings with a sun dress and a hijab,as overall ianya menutup aurat tapi do you know that although u covered your every little flesh and skin but yet the tight leggings actually revealing the curve of your body that will cause some "lustrous" feeling sparks by the opposite sex?
"When simplicity is the best, you'll be pretty enough just with your persona and charisma.Just smile more :) "

Assalamualaikum wbt

My Friend Rizalman,

Appreiciate your views on Islamic fashion. Agree that the concept of the baju "kurong" is indeed Islamic, ie "kurong". Agreed to that the western concept of fashion runs in contradiction with the values in Islam.

During the Islamisation of Indonesia, Wali Songo adopted the wayang kulit as a means of dakwah. In the current Malaysian scene, fashion ie, looking beautiful, entails all sort of things unislamic. IFF is an effort to slowly change the paradigm from beautiful equals to " koyak sana silak sini" to a more decent and " mosque compliance" attire. Indeed this effort needs the support of concern designers to help move the trend away from the idea of being beautiful means being unislamic. It is an effort to move away from the concept of beauty as dictate by PAris Milan and New York.

I for one cannot agree that fashion and islam are distint and apart. It depends surely on your perception of what is fashion and why you create clothes. If one create clothes, as a form of work, ie that all work can be view and accepted as Ibadah,( innas salati wanusuki wamayaya wama...) hence, there is no separation; hence there is a need to ensure that as we go on, we get closer to the dictates of islam.

The journey is still long, and still require alot of work. and surely such paradign shift can be made much easier if more talented designers, like your self together help create the flow.

That journey targets the media, the clientele and also the designers. Designers that participate in IFF are slowly expose to what is ISlamic, slowly and surely made aware of the dictate of ISlam. Slowly and surely convience that they can create and make money by creating " mosque compliance" attire.

We must get together one of this days

salam

somehow this post "opened" my eyes that there's another point of view that we can share when it comes to "Fashion In Islam" or "Islam In Fashion"...sometime people tend to create and mix the right element in a wrong way that resulted in..well u tgk sendirilah.

nani said...

rizalman,
i truly agree with u
i do not support IFF because, the fashions are wrongly done. the skirts are shorter, the clothes are so thin and see-through, the kebayas are too tight that the mat rempits could grab you, and the hijabs did not cover the very seductive shape of the chest.

i believe, the original jubah, baju kurung and any loose clothings are the symbol of islam. and of course, hijabs too.
and, thank you so much for explaining this to the rest of the world.

i am truly proud of you
